Wake

Standard

By Dana Janine Diamond

Life has become
a series of staving
off pain
uncovering
devastating
mysteries
one day
we will listen
to the songs
of this time
but for now
we are on
a small, silent craft
isolated
in the middle
of the ocean
and the storm
threatens all
day and night
I wish it weren’t so
I wish it weren’t so

Following
behind the unwritten
it’s impossible to keep
balance
get up for a time
end up
back in the water
waving to the trees
and all the others
moving, sailing ahead
It’s cooler now
just a slight chill
we’ve left summer behind
